Mr Gabriel Alvarez

Plastic and reconstructive surgeon and skin cancer expert

Mr Alvarez has 30 years experience in Plastic Surgery.

He is on the General Medical Council Specialist Register for Plastic Surgery, a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS) and an associate member of the British Association of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS).

Plastic and cosmetic surgery education and training

He qualified at the National Autonomous University in Mexico City in 1970. Two years later he started his general surgical training at St Georges Hospital and the Royal Marsden Hospitals.

He then went on to start his plastic surgery training at the Middlesex Hospital London, the Hospital for Sick Children Great Ormond Street, University College London, and the Plastic Surgery unit at Queen Mary’s Hospital, Roehampton.

Throughout his training, Mr Alvarez also worked as a private assistant to many prominent plastic surgeons, gaining extensive experience in cosmetic surgery.

Over 30 years of experience as plastic and cosmetic surgeon

In 1978, he returned to Mexico City and worked as a Plastic Surgeon at the Hospital General de Mexico where he developed techniques for facial reconstruction which were published in the British Journal of Plastic Surgery.

Also, at this time he refined his cosmetic surgery techniques working alongside Dr Fernando Ortiz Monasterio as well as other prominent Mexican surgeons.

In 1982, he returned to the UK and worked for the NHS at University College Hospital and The Royal Free Hospital. In 1995, he worked as a consultant plastic surgeon at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow Essex until 2002.

Teaching the next generation of plastic and cosmetic surgeons

Mr Alvarez has an active interest in the teaching of surgery and has organised several courses in minor surgery. He has published a CD ROM course on the subject that has now become integral part of the E step™ Surgeons in Training Education Programme of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the E step™ Foundation course of the same institution . He has been invited to lecture worldwide, not only in the UK and Mexico, but in France, Italy and the USA.

Publishing scientific papers on plastic and cosmetic surgery

Mr Alvarez has published papers on “The aglossia adactylia syndrome” and described the “Split sternomastoid myocutaneous flap”.
