Facelift (Rhytidectomy)

About Facelifts (Rhytidectomy)

Facelifts or rhytidectomy is an operation that is performed to rejuvenate the face as it ages to give a more youthful appearance.

A facelift usually involves the:

  • Removal of excess facial skin
  • Tightening of underlying tissues and
  • Redraping of the skin on the patient’s face/neck.

The extent of work in facelift surgery is dependant on the age of the patient and the amount of rejuvenation that is expected.

It is common for some rhytidectomy patients to have areas of the face that tend to be more of a concern to them than other areas.

Rhytidectomy Before and After

Before Facelifts

Before facelifts are considered it is important that prospective patients know the difference between a good and a bad facelift in order to choose the appropriate surgeon for the procedure.

I will always try to use the simplest procedure when performing a facelift. The reason for this is that it is very important to me to create a natural look afterwards with less risk.

In my opinion a bad facelift is when an individual has an unnatural look that looks operated on.

It is also important to note that when undergoing a rhytidectomy, eyelid surgery isn’t included. An individual suffering from puffy upper and lower eyelids, should consider double eyelid surgery in conjunction with their face lift or as a separate procedure.

We can discuss all of this in more detail during our consultation.

Every operation has limitations and carries a risk of complications. Your surgeon will discuss these in detail during your consultation.

During Rhytidectomy

Facelifts are helpful for eliminating loose skin folds and restore the tone on the eyebrows, cheeks, jowls and neck. The incisions are concealed within the hair above the ear and behind the ear in traditional facelifts.

The only truly visible part of the scar is on the crease in front of the ear. With time it fades away only to leave a faint pale line.

bad facelift would produce exaggerated results and entirely change the facial expression and features of the patient, producing creases on the cheeks and stretched earlobes.

The rhytidectomy therefore needs to be fine tuned to avoid this and to produce a natural result, where the face looks fresh and youthful.

Over several months, the scars from the incisions will fade. However, it may take up to 10 months for them to refine completely. Remember, that the scars are permanent but that they will over a sufficient period of time appear as faint pale lines.

Facelift surgery  can be performed alone, but can also be performed along with other procedures such as:

After Facelift surgery

Face lift before and after

After facelift surgery you may experience swelling which is normal with most cosmetic procedures. The majority of the swelling will likely subside within two weeks but your face will appear slightly swollen for up to several weeks.

Facelift patiets will most likely be able to return to work within three weeks after their procedure. As with all other surgeries it is important that you avoid any strenuous activity, and lifting for approximately three to four weeks.

Furthermore, after rhytidectomy surgery a patient must not get any  sun exposure to the face for two to three months. Not doing so may delay healing and compromise the final result.

Facelifst before and after results can successfully be noted once all the swelling has subsided. This will take three to four weeks.

The quality of the skin varies from patient to patient, hence the longevity of the benefits of this procedure varies also from patient to patient. Patients that have inelastic skin that ages quickly will have shorter-lived benefits.
