Rhinoplasty surgery (Correction of nose shape)

About Rhinoplasty surgery

Case 2 pre-op profile

Case 2 post-op profile

Rhinoplasty (correction of nose shape), also commonly known as nose surgery is a surgical procedure that:

  • Shortens or lengthens the nose
  • Changes the shape of the nose
  • Straightens the bridge of the nose or
  • Repairs a birth defect or nose injury such as a broken nose
I am a strong believer in creating a natural look when my patients undergo plastic surgery. The nose is a central feature to the face and when making changes to it, it needs to fit naturally with the rest of the patients facial features.

In some cases rhinoplasty is performed to assist a patient who struggles with breathing problems.

Essentially a nose reshaping procedure is performed to make various changes to the shape or size of the nose for improved functionality or appearance of the nose.

In the event where a nose job  requires the implanting of bone or other material to increase the size of the nose ,the procedure is called augmentation rhinoplasty surgery.

Have a look at the before and after rhinoplasty surgery pictures of my patients and feel free to read what others have to say about their cosmetic surgery results.

During Nose surgery

Nose surgery can be performed in one of two ways depending on their complexity;

  • With an open rhinoplasty or
  • With a  closed rhinoplasty

With  closed nose surgery the incisions are made inside the nostrils.  Generally, the incisions inside the nose leave no visible scars.  However, sometimes, faint scars are left on the grooves on the side of the nose when the size is reduced.

With regards to open nose surgery the procedure involves an additional incision made to the septum (the bit of skin that separates the nostrils).

When open rhinoplasty is performed a small scar is left on the septum. This type of nose surgery is reserved for complicated cases that require extensive work.

Nose reshaping surgery can be done under local or general anaesthesia and depending on the complexity of the case, the nose surgery operation lasts for approximately one to two hours and involves a hospital stay of one night.

My approach to any plastic surgery is that if there is a  more simple procedure that will deliver the patient with the result they desire, I will opt for making the surgery less  complicated instead.

The reason for this is that a simpler procedure can deliver better results as there is less risk.

Every operation has limitations and carries a risk of complications. Your surgeon will discuss these in detail during your consultation.

After Rhinoplasty surgery

After rhinoplasty surgery, the patient returns home when the nasal packs are removed. The nasal packs are normally left for 24 hours.

Usually after a week to ten days, the external nasal splint is removed. The stitches are dissolvable so there is no need for removal.

A patient who has undergone nose reshaping surgery can expect the following after rhinoplasty:

  • You will most likely experience some swelling and bruising
  • Black and blue discolouration underneath the eyes
  • Some discharge containing mucus and old blood
  • A congested nose

A patient must get plenty of rest after nose surgery and sleep on a pillow that will allow their heads to be raised higher than their heads

You will most likely be able to return to work within two weeks after your procedure. However, it is important that you avoid the following for up to four weeks:

  • Any strenuous activity
  • Swimming
  • Blowing your nose
  • Wearing glasses

Do not get any sun exposure to the operated area for three months as it could cause permanent skin discolouration of the nose area.

You will only be able to notice the final result of your rhinoplasty surgery after three to four months. Although recovery time may differ from patient to patient, the nose still needs a good few months to heal completely.

As a plastic and reconstructive surgeon with expertise in cosmetic surgery I am confident that I will be able to answer all your nose reshaping surgery questions.
